Soundbites From Develop Croydon Conference

Plenty of speakers had something to say on the future of Croydon at the Develop Croydon Conference 2014. Here is a selection of the views given:

Jo Negrini, executive director of development and environment, London Borough of Croydon: “I think we are lucky to have great partnerships working with us at the council and we are lucky because I think we have got our timing right.

Colm Lacey, director of development, London Borough of Croydon: “The time for talking in Croydon is done. We need to get a wriggle-on and get this [Westfield-Hammerson development] done, or we’ll miss another cycle. We’ve missed two or three already.”

Peter Cole, chief investment officer, Hammerson “As well as shopping online, everyone goes to real shops. There will always be real shops. What’s changing is that these shops need to be showcases. That’s what we are going to provide in Croydon – flagship shops.’

Kath Scanlon, Research Fellow, London School of Economics: “Coolness comes in cycles. Croydon has affordable housing and people can afford to live here. They come in colonies and before you know it there will be independent coffee shops springing up.”

Jennet Siebrits, Head of Residential Research, CBRE: “We don’t want Croydon to be a place that’s just for young professionals at the weekend. We are not trying to make it a new place, we are trying to make it a better place.”

Alison Butler, deputy leader, Croydon Council: “We are 15 minutes from London and 15 minutes from Gatwick and we want Croydon to be a destination of choice.”

Toni Letts, cabinet member for economic development, London Borough of Croydon: “We want Croydon to be a European tech city. We are working to create a hub in the town centre for start-up tech businesses.”

Carolyn Kenney, development director, Hammerson:”It’s not about beating developers over the head [for social contributions]. A lot of what we’re doing is on a voluntary basis and we are engaging with the community.”
